Leading with Authenticity, Care, and Empathy: A Call to School Leaders

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

As we approach the end of school terms, and the end of school years, where we get tired, energy drops, student behaviour might not be at its best, safeguarding and wellbeing concerns might be on the up, and the exam seasons have taking their toll, this is a kind reminder to continue to be you: be authentic, be caring, be empathetic. Our students, teachers, and members of our community need us to be on form. Our communities deserve nothing less.

Authenticity, Brené Brown

In the bustling world of education, it's all too easy to get caught up in the never-ending demands, paperwork, and deadlines that come our way. Amidst the chaos, I want to take a moment to remind each one of you about the fundamental qualities that make a remarkable difference in the lives of our students, staff, and community. I'm talking about authenticity, care, and empathy - the bedrock of true leadership and teaching.

Authenticity, a powerful trait! In a world filled with pretences and facades, let us be the leaders who stay true to ourselves and our values. Authenticity is about showing up as our genuine selves, without fear or compromise. It's about embracing our strengths, acknowledging our vulnerabilities, and inspiring others through our example. When we lead with authenticity, we foster trust, build strong relationships, and create an environment where people feel safe to be their authentic selves. Our students need to see real role models, and our teams need to know that they are working with leaders who are not afraid to be human.

"Authenticity: the daily practice of letting go of who we think we are supposed to be, and embracing who we are." Brené Brown.

Care - let it be the heartbeat of everything we do. We are not merely educators; we are caretakers of young minds, moulding the future of world. Each student who attends our schools is a unique individual, carrying dreams, fears, and untapped potential. This is also true for our team members. It is our responsibility to see beyond student grades and test scores, and staff appraisals, to truly understand their needs, struggles, and aspirations. Care is about actively listening, empathising, and going the extra mile to support our communities in their journey. It means reaching out to a struggling student or team member, offering a comforting word, or simply being present when they need it the most. Remember, there's almost always a reason behind the behaviours and actions of the members of our communities. Let us be the leaders who create a culture of care, where every student and team member feels valued, seen, and nurtured.

Empathy - the cornerstone of meaningful connections. It is the ability to step into another person's shoes, to understand their joys, challenges, and pain. As leaders, empathy is our superpower. It is what allows us to build bridges, resolve conflicts, and foster a sense of belonging. Empathy is not a mere checkbox on our to-do list; it requires us to be fully present, to listen without judgment, and to respond with genuine understanding. We differentiate our approaches to teaching and learning for our students. How do we differentiate our approaches to our leadership to get the best from, and meet the needs of, our communities? Let us seek to understand before seeking to be understood, for it is through empathy that we can forge deep connections with our students, staff, and community.

My fellow leaders, the world is hungry for authenticity, care, and empathy. In a time when our communities are bombarded with superficiality and disconnectedness, let us be the guides that illuminate their path. It is not an easy task, but it is a worthy one. It requires courage, vulnerability, and a steadfast commitment to creating a better future.

As we walk the halls of our schools and engage with our communities online, we must remember the power we hold. Our words, actions, and presence shape the hearts and minds of our communities and the next generation. Lead with authenticity, care deeply, and embrace empathy. We must inspire others through our example, and aspire and aim for a wave of positive change sweeping through your classrooms and beyond.

Whoever needs to read this... You're doing a fantastic job. Keep going. Keep being you.

Let us rise to the occasion and create a legacy of authentic leadership and teaching. Our communities deserve nothing less.
