Putting People First: Prioritising People and Empathetic Leadership

Looking to build a successful organisation? Put people first.

Teamwork. Hands in the middle

The following thoughts are not necessarily revolutionary, nor will they provide a paradigm shift in the leadership world; however, a reinforcement about the importance of people is fundamental.

As a leader in different organisations, I am constantly reminded of the importance of prioritising people. After all, it is colleagues who drive the success of a company. Without their hard work, dedication, and expertise, we would not be where we are today.

But what does it mean to prioritise people in an organisation? It means creating a positive and supportive work environment that values and respects the needs and contributions of all colleagues. It means ensuring that everyone has the resources and support they need to do their jobs effectively and to grow and develop as professionals.

One way to prioritise people in an organisation is to focus on building a strong culture of inclusion and diversity. This means fostering a sense of belonging and respect for all colleagues, regardless of their background, race, gender, or other personal characteristics. By creating a diverse and inclusive culture, we can tap into the unique perspectives and experiences of our colleagues, leading to more innovative and effective solutions to the challenges we face.

Another important aspect of prioritising people is providing opportunities for growth and development. This includes offering ongoing training and professional development programs, as well as clear career progression pathways. By investing in the professional growth of our colleagues, we can not only attract and retain top talent, but also inspire them to reach their full potential and contribute their best work to the organisation.

In addition to these efforts, it is important to also prioritise the physical and mental wellbeing of our colleagues. This means providing resources such as flexible work arrangements, considerations for workload, wellness programs, and mental health support. By prioritising the wellbeing of our people, we can create a positive and healthy work environment that promotes productivity and satisfaction. When asked "what is the most important leadership quality?", it has to be empathy. Being able to empathise to colleague's varied and complex circumstances is key to supporting them as individuals.

Finally, one of the most crucial ways to prioritise people in an organisation is to listen to and value their input and feedback. This means creating an open and transparent culture where employees feel comfortable speaking up and voicing their ideas and concerns. By actively seeking out and considering the perspectives of our colleagues, we can create a more collaborative and effective community that is better equipped to adapt to change and drive success.

Prioritising people in an organisation is essential for its long-term success. By creating a positive and supportive environment, investing in employee growth and development, prioritising wellbeing, and valuing employee input and feedback, we can foster a culture of excellence that drives business results and employee satisfaction. Most important of all, being an empathetic leader, who values colleagues as individuals and considers their individual circumstances, will reap the benefits from colleagues who want to come to work and to do their best by the organisation.
